What is the difference between a mini C-arm and a full-size C-arm?
Mini C-arms are designed for extremity imaging (hand, wrist, foot, ankle) in outpatient or ambulatory settings. They are lighter, more manoeuvrable, and produce lower radiation output. Full-size C-arms are used for spine, hip, abdomen, vascular, and general surgical fluoroscopy, with higher generator output and larger detector or II size.
Do I need a flat-panel detector or is an image intensifier sufficient?
Image intensifier C-arms are fully adequate for routine orthopaedic and general surgery fluoroscopy. Flat-panel detectors are recommended where image quality, dose reduction, and dynamic range are priorities u2014 particularly for vascular interventions, complex spine procedures, and cardiac hybrid theatres.
What radiation safety requirements apply to C-arm use?
C-arm systems must be operated by or under the supervision of trained radiographers or surgeons authorised to use fluoroscopy. Radiation dose logs (DAP records), lead apron and thyroid shield use, and regular QA tests (kV accuracy, dose rate) are mandatory in most regulatory jurisdictions.
Can a C-arm be used in a standard operating theatre without shielding?
Yes. Mobile C-arms are designed for use in standard theatres with personal protective equipment (lead aprons, thyroid shields, eyewear). Fixed lead shielding or a dedicated radiation room is generally not required for mobile C-arm use. Check local radiation safety regulations for specific requirements.
